We can also boast Coach of the Year too...

We were already so proud as a club for what we have achieved and developed since our humble beginnings but even more so over the last several years... this is what the West Riding FA had to say about some of our successes:

Calverley United Junior Football Club has come together over the difficult last year we’ve all faced and offered everyone involved support, encouragement and hope. They’ve worked hard to become a Community Charter Standard Club, achieved last year, and their acceptance as a new Wildcats Centre, helping further grow local girl’s access to football and fitness. The hard work behind the scenes often goes unnoticed but the Club does so many things, like as developing a Youth Committee to help inform the Club’s DNA, improving the whole experience for everyone involved.

The positive impact in the local community is truly phenomenal. They’ve grown the girls game from 5 girls, on a mixed team 4 years ago, to nearly 100 girls training and playing regularly, and their first ever girls’ team reached the West Riding Cup Final last year. Behind the scenes volunteers have worked really hard to help improve access to better pitches and facilities. During lockdown the club inspired over 180 players and coaches to contribute to the #PassTheBallNotTheVirus challenge, just one example that shows what an impressive, inclusive, and well-loved community club they are.

They’re a small village club which has doubled in size over the last 5 years, even though there are a lot of clubs nearby with huge catchment areas and all without an official clubhouse and limited use of pitches. It’s the volunteers that makes the club stand out, they really do inspire the children from the local community, and further afield, to be the best they can be. They’ve come together to raise money for community, school and sports defibrillators and they’ve worked so hard to ensure that each return to football following lockdown is as safe, and fun, as it possibly can be.

It was also double delight for the club to see that Luke Cooper had also won Coach of the Year for youth players. Congratulations to everyone at the club.

We are all delighted that grassroots football will return at the end of March! For now, our managers, club committee, the leagues and the West Riding FA are working extremely hard to fine tune all details so that we can all safely return. How we do that, is yet to be be confirmed but please wait to hear from your team managers.

                              Challenge Completed!

We have completed our Around (Through) the World challenge in flying colours, with a week to go and 500km over what we needed!

With JustGiving and cash totals, we have also raised a staggering £1649!

This will all go towards the David Cooper Memorial fund and in doing so, it will be there to purchase another defibrillator for a community, school or sports club as well go towards the upkeep of the 7 other defibrillators we have been a part of fundraising for.

The idea of the challenge was to also give players and their families that extra little motivation to get out and get moving in whatever way, which has been important more than ever during this third lockdown! And maybe a boost for some to go the extra mile than what they already do! And I really hope that it has helped to do just that.

I (Luke) just want to say the most massive well done and thank you to everyone who has got involved with the challenge and supported it by donating. You are all incredible.

On the 16th March 2020, football came to a complete stop. The world faced a global pandemic with the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus and the whole country went on lockdown. Work places were closed with only key workers keeping the country going. The club rallied together, which was easy enough to do in this modern era of technology and we shared one simple goal; to pass the ball, not the virus...

For the first time in 2020, we will be running an FA Wildcats Centre for Girls aged 5-11. This will be an opportunity for any girl aged 5-11 to play football, as well as being another route into our girls' football teams. The overarching aim of the centre is to provide a safe environment where all girls, even with no experience can; have fun engaging with sport, develop fundamental skills, try a variety of sessions, learn new things and create foundations for a lifelong love of sport.

All of our coaches at the Wildcats Centre are volunteers, whom are usually parents of players and live in and around the local community. Volunteers present will hold an up to date CRC at a minimum and there will always be qualified FA coaches trained in football, first aid and safeguarding children present too.

Our parents and coaches 7v7 tournament is back for a third year!

Last season the David Cooper Memorial and Community Shield tournament made its second appearance, and after successfully raising nearly £1000 at both events we have helped to fund raise for more community defibrillators such as the one now at Calverley C of E Primary School.

The format of the tournament this year will consist of 7x 7v7 teams made up of the player's parents and coaches. There will be most likely someone you know who is playing so please come down and support them, or regardless, just enjoy some good old competitive football whilst supporting an important community cause. All details can be found in the picture above.

All of the money raised from this year's tournament will go towards another defibrillator for somewhere in and around the community. All of the proceeds will go towards the defibrillator fund.

Luke and the club are very proud to have fund-raised for another defibrillator, which has been donated to Calverley C of E Primary School. A majority of the fundraising has been carried out by Luke, his family and Calverley United Junior FC. A huge thank you to everyone who has helped out.

"As most will know, this June, it will be four years since I lost my Dad, to sudden cardiac arrest on a family holiday abroad. My Dad was a big supporter of the Calverley community and the local football club, chairing the junior section and running a team.

When my Dad suffered a heart attack, there was no defibrillator nearby and with being abroad, my Dad was not fortunate to get a fast response from an Ambulance either, as we would have here in England. My Dad was never diagnosed with a heart condition, despite the signals and going to the doctors for it. The point being, is that cardiac arrest can happen to anyone without any warning, even the young, fit and healthy. It has been recorded on average that 270 children die in the UK every year after suffering sudden cardiac arrest at school. Therefore, it is so important that schools, sports clubs and community groups have quick access to a defibrillator. A defibrillator is a device that gives a high energy electric shock to the heart of someone who is in cardiac arrest. If a defibrillator is used and effective CPR is performed within 3-5 minutes of cardiac arrest, their chance of survival increases from 6% to 74%. For every minute it takes for the defibrillator to reach someone and deliver a shock, their chances of survival reduce by up to 10%.

I am proud that me, my family and Calverley United Junior Football Club could raise the funds for what is now the 7th defibrillator we have been a part of attaining for in and around the community. Hopefully they never have to be used but it is assuring to know that they are in place. I hope that as well as this, that more people can be trained to carry out First Aid, CPR and use a defibrillator effectively. Thanks again to everyone who has supported me, my family and the football club in our fundraising efforts."

We hope that everyone has had an enjoyable start to the 2018/19 football season. This year has probably been our busiest ever as a club in terms of growth and transition. On that matter, it has been decided by the club's committee that we are to hold an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) before the Christmas period to ensure that the club continues to operate as smoothly as possible and in the best interest for all concerned. The official agenda of the meeting is yet to be confirmed however we can confirm that there will be further elections and re-elections for committee roles as well as further amendments to the club constitution.

The club would like to give you official notice that the EGM will be held on Tuesday 20th November, 7.30pm prompt start at the Calverley Conservative Club. Please can everyone connected to the club forward this notification on to each other as this meeting is open for all members (parents and guardians) of the club to attend should they wish to do so. It will be a great insight for members who do not currently volunteer, to see if and how they can help the club in its continued growth. We hope to see as many people there as possible.

On Sunday 2nd September, Calverley United Juniors held their second annual David Cooper Memorial and Community Shield tournament to help raise money for another club and community defibrillator. The event was set up last year in memory of the club's former Chairman and Coach who tragically died of sudden cardiac arrest three years ago. A total of ten teams played in the tournament, consisting of parents and coaches at the club, who represented their age-group that their children play for. It also included last year’s winning team, the ‘David Cooper All Stars’ and a ‘Calverley Veterans’ side who came out on top this year.

The now annual event was founded and organised by David’s son Luke with the support of his family Carol, Edan and Lauren. Luke said “If what had happened to my Dad had happened to somebody else he knew in the community, I know that he would have wanted to do something like this in their memory and in aid of the club and community, so it feels very right to do this in his memory”.

This year’s event raised a fantastic amount of £458.79 with the aim to add to that at the next fundraiser on the 30th September as Luke’s old Calverley United junior team he played for under his Dad will reunite to replay an old rivalry match against Pudsey Juniors at Calverley Park, 2pm. Please come down and support the match if you can. After all there's nothing like a local derby! A huge thank you to everyone who supported and helped out at the event, epitomising the club's spirit and dedication to it's community.

Calverley United U16s had been desperate for a new sponsor over the last few months and it was beginning to look like they would not secure one in time for the new season. A last minute decision to take a different approach proved that every cloud has a silver lining. Craig Kennedy's team provided a fantastic opportunity for both big and small businesses to get involved and sponsor their new home kit via a raffle, based on the National Lottery "bonus ball" numbers 1 to 59. At £10 a number, the winning one would become the main shirt sponsor for the 2018 - 2019 season.
With the risk that all numbers may not get filled, the local business community came together and all 59 numbers had been bought within two weeks of announcing the fundraiser. With all the numbers paid for, it was announced via the U16's Facebook page, that Saturday's draw (25th August 2018:
The format of the tournament this year will consist of 10x 7v7 teams made up of player's parents and coaches as well as other friends of the local community. There will be most likely someone you know who is playing so please come down and support them, or regardless, just enjoy some good old competitive football whilst supporting an important community cause. All details can be found in the picture above.

All of the money raised from this year's tournament will go towards a second accessible defibrillator for the Calverley area. There will be fun for the kids at the event which includes a Beat the Goalie stand and also a Crossbar Challenge. One hundred percent of the proceeds from all fundraising activities on the day will go towards the defibrillator fund.

With only 24 successful out of 93 applicants, Calverley coach Nathan Wyspianski (pictured above) has been accepted on to the FA Level 3 (UEFA B) course which will take place at the West Riding County FA and run throughout the coming season. Acceptance on to the course is a testament to the hard work Nathan has put in to his playing and coaching time with the Juniors for many years, and more recently the coaching he has done at the recently successful Calverley senior set up last year, as the 1st team earned promotion to the top division of the Yorkshire Amateur League and the club also brought a reserve team back in to the village.

At the delight of the junior football club, he will be putting it all into practice with Juniors as well as the seniors this season. Nathan will work in a football development role, as well as coaching the U12 age group alongside Paul Ward. The club can't wait to have Nathan back on board and wish him every success on his course.

After being nominated and then being awarded the Coopers' Cup Volunteer of the Year at the club's presentation day back in May, Luke Cooper has gone on to receive the Volunteer of the Year accolade within the whole West Riding County FA for the previous season gone by.

Calverley coach and volunteer Luke was nominated for the countless hours and effort that he puts into the club, coaching three age-groups and assisting the committee in running the club. Luke, alongside James Clayton and Nick Baker have also put in a lot of effort to start up a new girl's football section at the club which has so far been successful with more than 30 girls aged 4-7 attending training.

It was great just to be nominated. I don't expect recognition for what I do but it does make everything feel worth it when people are thankful for what you do. I'm a strong believer in recognising and applauding those who do good things so it's touching that someone has done that for me. The award is dedicated to everyone who has done so much for this great community club in the past and present. That includes my late father, David Cooper, former Chairperson of the club and also my Coach, who has inspired me to give back to the club I have played and coached for since I was six years old. There's a bright future for grassroots football in Calverley and it's a great feeling to be a part of it.

England Women and Arsenal striker Danielle Carter has praised Grow the Game and Calverley United JFC following the award of a £3000 grant from The FA.

The grant, which will provide a boost to grassroots female football in Calverley and the surrounding areas, has paved the way for Calverley United to create several new girls teams across the next few years. The club has already set up two teams in the U8/U7 age group for next season and training has started for next season's U6s. Two coaches have already completed their Level 1 coaching courses and the grant will enable more coaches to be trained.

Danielle said: “I would like to congratulate Calverley United JFC on working with the Football Foundation and West Riding FA to secure a Grow the Game grant. Playing in an all-female team from a young age was key to my development, so I am delighted that there will be more opportunities for women and girls in the local area and wish Calverley United JFC good luck during their debut season!”

Grow the Game is a programme funded by The FA and delivered by the Football Foundation. It awards grants to grassroots football clubs wishing to create new teams, especially amongst under-represented groups.

This year, £1,500 was made available for clubs looking to create new female and disability football teams to help towards the costs of FA coaching courses; FA league affiliation costs; referees’ fees; first aid kits; football kit and equipment.

Luke Cooper, Football Development Officer of the club said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive this funding from the FA and Football Foundation. It will allow myself, James and Nick who started the girls' section in April to make sure we sustain the girls we have currently playing football by providing more and better opportunities as well as better coaching and also encourage more girls to come give football a go!"

The current U6 team are making final preparations for their league debut in September when they become U7s. One of the most important parts of making that happen is having a kit, which with thanks to Spray Bay the boy's will have just that. The boys' were fortunate enough to wear them for their first summer tournament in drizzly Drighlington. Despite the spray of rain (pun definitely intended) it didn't dampen the boys' spirits, as they put on a really good show of football, battling against a mixture of teams. The smiles on their faces from the pictures, in their fantastic new kits just shows how thankful and proud they are.

Matt Hatfield, manager of the U6s said "We'd like to say a huge thank you to Spray Bay Leeds for kindly sponsoring the U6 team kit. This sponsorship has helped the age group secure a kit for their two teams in time for the U7 league starting September. Spray Bay have made all of the boys very happy!". The club would like to welcome Spray Bay to the Calverley United family and wish them and the U6 boys every success going forward.

I have always played the game (football) and my daughter began to show a keen interest after a charity game a few years ago. When the opportunity arose to play mixed football at Calverley with the boys she was happy to give it a go... the rest is history. Week after week, 5 girls turned up to play football with the boys. Initially, I helped out with the mixed team but it became evident the girls would be much happier in an all girls' league, so we had to make it happen and it’s a great feeling watching the girls develop and become a team. This sparked the idea to invite other local girls to come train and play, which has rapidly expanded from 7 to over 30 girls only a month after starting training. Another easy decision was sponsoring the kit, the exposure we have received from all the interest in what we are trying to achieve has been fantastic for us."

Claytons MOT is a returning sponsor at the club, as they generously sponsored the U7 boys' jackets in the season that has just gone by. It is fantastic to have a local business continuously supporting the kids who play for Calverley United JFC. We would like to thank James and Claytons MOT for their continued support. The club would like to wish them all the very best on their new adventure.

It is an exciting time for the Club and this is particularly evident with the setting up of the first girls-only team 'The Class of 2018' which is going from strength to strength in the U7 age category. It has been a pleasure to watch the girls grow in confidence and to start working as a team. The Club is run with fun and fairness at the core of all activities and to see 30 girls enjoying each week from Reception to Year 2 age group is a testament to the hard work and passion displayed by all of the coaches."

Calverley United U13s were crowned as the Champions of their division this morning, after two successive back to back wins in their double-header against Guiseley. The team went in today's games knowing that one point might be enough and two to secure the title. There was a lot of emotion on the pitch but nerves began to settle in the first game as Calverley took the lead inside two minutes. Guiseley were not going to let Calverley do it the easy way as they piled on the pressure and were 2-1 up at half time. Calverley hit the post early doors into the second half, questioning whether it was going to be their day. The U13s began to show their resilience and it started to pay off as captain Jake Lockwood brought them level with a stunning free kick. The shackles then came off as they stormed to a 5-2 win, assuring league victory. The boys then finished the league season of in style, winning the second game in a hard fought 3-1 battle. The season is not over yet for Neil Longden's U13s, as they look forward to a cup semi-final next week against 2nd place Alpha who will be looking for something to prove after Calverley beat them to the title. Whatever happens next week, the boy's can stand up tall with a big smile on their faces and be extremely proud of their achievements this season.

Calverley's U12 Blue team secured the league title this week after their clash away against Horsforth this Sunday (22nd April) was forfeited by the home team, giving the Blues the three points. This meant that Bradford Central whom are currently placed in 2nd cannot mathematically catch them up. Martin and Richard who manage the Blue team said that they could not be any more prouder and it is a testament to the boy's hard work and determination this season.

Football is on the up for the U12s as it is not just the Blue team that have had success this season. The Yellow team have come on leaps and bounds and are really enjoying their football. A 10th league win of the season against Eccleshill on Thursday night (19th April) saw them go into 3rd place in their league. The Yellows have become the "Invincibles" on the road this season, playing 8 without loss. They have two games left to play to cement 3rd place.

Calverley United Junior Football Club would like to invite all of its players to celebrate yet another season of football in Calverley. This season has been a difficult one in terms of the weather but we won't let that dampen our spirits. We will come together at our annual award presentation to celebrate all of our individual and team successes we have had this season. The event will take place on the 12th May 2018 at the Calverley Mechanics Institute. All of our players from U5s to U16s are invited, along with family and friends at £2 per ticket. For those new to the club, the dress code is informal.

Please walk down to the presentation if possible as parking is extremely limited. If you do need to drive, we would advise carefully parking around Calverley Park and walking down, which will only take you a minute or two.

All in all, regardless of the results, everyone had a great laugh and raised lots of money to go towards Calverley's community defibrillator. Calverley St Wilfrids Cricket Club who featured in the tournament have raised a huge amount of money towards the defibrillator also, amongst other community groups. The football club were there to support their fundraiser event last week, the Brian Wilson Memorial match which was also a massive success. The signed Leeds United shirt that we donated to the raffle/auction raised over a £100. It is great to see the football club and the cricket club supporting each other and the community, especially when both clubs have gone through such similar and saddening circumstances in losing David Cooper and Brian Wilson, their Chairpersons, to a heart attack.

There will be a few sore legs this morning (Monday 4th September) so we think that we will leave the football up to the kids for now... until next year. We hope to build on this years events and keep raising money for important community causes. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported and donated towards the tournament, in particularly those who volunteered their time in running and setting up the event.

Calverley United JFC would like to invite all of its players, members and surrounding community to come down and support our first annual David Cooper Memorial and Community shield tournament. The format of the tournament will consist of 8 teams playing each other once, who are made up of coaches and parents from different age-groups across the club. A "David Cooper's All Stars" team is also set to feature.

All of the money raised from the tournament will go towards the current community fundraising, to have an accessible defibrillator for the Calverley area. We hope that the tournament is a success and will become an annual event where we can raise money for great causes like this one.

I am sure that we will be doing it again for next years new age-group. I think it is excellent that we (coaches, parents and players) have all come together to not just celebrate receiving new kit but also to agree and share the values that we expect for next season. I would like to thank everyone involved for making it a successful and a memorable evening for the kids, with massive thanks to Steve Foster in co-organising the night".

It has been a few years since the club's only ever girls team, however Calverley United's U6 age-group has grown from strength to strength in recent seasons, attracting both boys and girls from different schools in and around the Calverley area. We have had a lot of interest from girls this season and today (Sunday 9th July 2017) the U6's played their first ever girls match together which turned out to be an excellent show of football from themselves and their opponents, Horsforth St Margarets.

Next season they will play mixed football in the Craven, Aire and Wharfedale League but hope to a have a few more girls matches as well. We hope to see more girls enjoying and playing football in the near future whether that be in a girls team or a mixed team.

Calverley United's U7 age-group have just received their first ever kit to wear ahead of their first season in junior football. The brand new kit, incorporating the club's traditional colours of yellow and blue has kindly been sponsored by Alatas UK: Crane Services Worldwide. The company, who now own the business of our late former chairman David Cooper have very kindly offered to pay for the kit in tribute to his memory, which still lives on in both the company and the football club.

Luke Cooper (pictured above), who manages the age-group alongside Steven Foster and Matt Hatfield said that "I am very pleased about the quality of the kit, with thanks to local company SportsBulk. I am proud that I was able to organise this. It is something my Dad (David Cooper) would be extremely proud of, knowing how proud that he was able to sponsor my age-group kit at the U18 age-group. The kids will be so chuffed and proud to play for Calverley."

Parents of the players say that the kit is fantastic and the children are very excited, with Steven Foster claiming that "they will be the smartest looking team in the league."
The David Cooper Testimonial match played on Wednesday went down as a great evening in memory of coach and chairman Dave.

The Final XI beat the Past XI 4-0 with Charles Dalton, Jack Stocks, Josh Greig and Luke Cooper getting on to the score sheet.

The score regardless, it was a great reunion to play a match in the memory of Dave, raising £450 in the process.

    Thank-you to everyone who supported.
